Recovery

Most stone procedures are day-case or single-night stays. A stent, when used, is usually removed within one to two weeks, and stone analysis guides the prevention plan afterwards.

Questions patients ask

Will a stone pass on its own?
Small stones in the lower ureter often pass with fluids, pain control and time. Larger stones, an obstructed kidney, uncontrolled pain, fever or a single functioning kidney change that answer, and are reasons to be seen quickly.
When is stone pain an emergency?
Fever with loin pain, vomiting that prevents fluids, no urine output, or pain that will not settle with medication. An obstructed and infected kidney needs drainage the same day.
What does laser stone surgery involve?
A telescope is passed along the natural urinary passage and the stone is fragmented with a laser, without an external cut. Most cases are day-case or a single-night stay.
Which scan is used?
A non-contrast CT of the kidneys, ureters and bladder is the most accurate for stones. Ultrasound is used first in pregnancy and in children, and for follow-up where repeated radiation is best avoided.
Why do stones keep coming back?
Usually because the underlying chemistry has not been looked at. Stone analysis and a metabolic assessment identify who needs specific dietary changes or medication, rather than being told only to drink more water.
